Yo, I'm jealous of the Onyx Edition!

For me this game equals only addiction

so it's fokkin' nice to play this devoting religion

on a very cool board that is showing the difference!

This board is cool compared to a normal board which totally isn't

and Spece thinks the same so the dude will be quoting my vision! :D

The infiltrator hasn't a rank of himself. You can use this piece to take out an enemy by calling the piece by its name (rank) when the piece is attacked.

So, if you know where the marsh or colonel or whatever ohther piece  is and you attack this piece and call the right rank, it's yours.

On the other hand, every piece is higher ranked then the infiltrator, so a spy can take him out.

I have the boardgame at home with the infiltrator-option, but I don't like it.

I think you can't play with the spy or infiltrator at the same time. Before beginning, decide by mutual agreement if both players play with the spy or infiltrator.

But I do not like the concept of the infiltrator.

The rules by playing with the infiltrator are that you have one scout less.

I have the '73 Stratego. Christmas present from my parents (in 73), so it has the wear and tear of an entuthiastic little Stratego-loving boy. Case is spoiled, but worst, one red scout has been broken, and is glued together. :(

I also have the '74 De luxe edition, another christmas present.

They are both in my moms old loft, haven't been played with for some 30 odd years.

(Just because I love to hear myself write.)

The inf makes the game more strategic in my opinion.  A lot of the game is based on lucky setups.  The inf takes that luck away since now you can cover all 3 points of entry.  One entry with your Marshal, 1 entry with your General and Spy and 1 entry with the inf and a Colonel.

Having a higher piece advantage such as owning a General, (and your opponent not having their General) is not that big of a deal as long as the Inf is in game.  It is easy in regular stratego to plow your way through your enemies when you have a higher ranked piece advantage.  Losing your high ranked pieces early in the game doesn't mean you are doomed unless you have lost your inf as well.

The inf also makes scouts more valuable.  Once the location of the inf is known, Scouts can easily take out infs on long straightaways.

Instead of trying to conceal the location of your Marshal, you are really trying to conceal the location of your inf.  He becomes your most valuable piece, yet your weakest piece in battle face to face.  Once he is spotted, you can almost go back to a game of regular stratego, since the inf can’t cover all 3 entry points at once.

That is just my opinion.

Can the infiltrator capture the flag in the conventional way if he has the lowest rank?

Yes he can capture the flag.

To tell you the truth, I play with him able to use his special ability anywhere on the game board.  Makes him almost like a spotter in the Sci Fi version, but there is only 1 of him.  40 Pieces and 1 spotter is ok.  30 pieces and 2 spotters is not good.

I've noticed many of the versions posted here don't have the numbers on the pieces themselves. I feel like that would make it difficult to play with, especially against someone who is not too familiar with the game.
I am looking for a version to buy, and I like some of these because they look like they would be very resistant to tipping over, but I am not sure about them.

I have quit the site until the cheating players are dealt with.

The Jumbo Original version with the infiltrator piece in the game box is the best one to buy in my opinion.

Has the piece value with 10 as the marshal.

The Infiltrator is an extra piece that comes with the game.  You do not have to play with the infiltrator if you don't want to.

This set also allows you space at the bottom of the box.  I am able to store my sci-fi version inside of this box as well as the Jumbo Original set.

I had to get mine online, since they don't carry this version in the stores where I live.
