The Semi-finals: a repeat of 1st v 2nd in the group stage... perhaps the draw needs some re-shuffling next year.

Champions League Final 2018

playa1 will be joining Hielco in the final after a win over Great Manos yesterday.

Both players have one Champions League Title to their name. Hielco won the competition in 2016, while playa1 is looking to become the first player to retain the title after his victory last year.

From all the staff at the Pioneer, good luck. May it be a tremendous duel with plenty of pieces meeting gruesome deaths.

There are just over 48 hours until Champions League registration closes.

Currently, 36 players have signed up.

Of that group, only two have tasted victory before - Sem van Geffen and Nortrom - the winners of PRO Ladder and WinterTourn. (3 if you count josephwhite’s debut title in the PRO Random last year).

With a string of big names missing, many players are sensing that this could finally be their year for glory.

Or are Hielco, OVERLORD, playa1, gkaros, Losermaker and Sniper (who comprise all remaining past champions of online stratego) just waiting to sneak in at the last minute?

With battle side tickets in the Last 16 fetching between 50 and 100 battlecoins - and the old guard of champions seeming fatigued by tournament play - a well known consumer group recently criticised the tournament organisers for pricing fans out of the market.

Luckily it’s not real.

The first results have filtered in.

Top seed Nortrom beat vspy13, commenting ‘close game indeed’.

3rd seed Sem van Geffen defeated Fairway.

In Group 8, Napoleon 1er grabbed a win against Kambia.

It's been quiet here for a while now,  some gossip Journals say "The Pioneer" is having financial issues and are not able to publish much, other gossip journals say there is trouble within the team.

Only Top two from each group qualify, 3rd place is eliminated.

We did discuss the idea of a separate knockout tournament for places 3 and 4 a while back, but this hasn’t happened yet. Maybe next year.

Although the Pioneer has had financial issues, luckily no charity funds have been involved to help the famous gossip newspaper get up to publish. Now here is the coveted update on Stratego's Champions League, with the possible participants for the knock-out stages.

In Group A Nortrom, the only participant from the 'Big 3', is currently leading Group A with 18 points. However Great Manos is trailing behind him, and Round 5 will see which player will finish first! Both Nortrom and Great Manos are already secured from a place in the Final 16 though, given the head-to-head result between Great Manos and mirmidonas.gr.

Group B has not yet seen big surprises, with all top seeds winning against the lower seeds. This means Seed 1 and Seed 2, Spion... and Henry domerkant respectively, both have qualified. In the last Round, a thriller match between those 2 must decide the Group B Champion.

Group C, also named 'pool of death' is one of the most challenging pools to play in. Currently USA Champion Sorrow (Fks) is doing a great job defeating both KARAISKAKIS and young Dutch talent Sem van Geffen. This means he will qualify for sure, the second spot will be taken by either Sem van Geffen or KARAISKAKIS, who will fight in Round 5.

In Group D, roeczak is on top of his group with 3 wins over LAZZLO, FGP_ and garlick. Both josephwhite and LAZZLO however, continue to pressure him, both with 13 points. If top seed josephwhite wins against roeczak, and LAZZLO wins as well, there will be a 3-way tie.

Group E sees the same situation as in Group D, with maxroelofs 3/3 and leppie and hondjekapitein 2/3. This situation is much more complicated though, as hondjekapitein defeated leppie. This means there could be a tie between these 3 if leppie wins against maxroelofs and hondjekapitein takes down PHAETHON. Also, if both leppie and hondjekapitein lose, hondjekapitein will still take the second place based on his head-to-head result versus leppie. This promises an exciting last round!

Group F is dominated by Swiss talent Napoleon 2ème and Moghedien, with Jesus_saves closeby. The winner of Napoleon 2ème and Jesus_saves will qualify for sure, however the second place could come down to a tie again if Napoleon 2ème loses against Jesus_saves and Moghedien loses against Capt.gunter. In this case, Napoleon 2ème and Moghedien will play a tie-break.

Group G only counts 4 players, but still competition is fierce. 3 players can still qualify with the possibility of a tie between TheOptician, don mitsos and dalee. The match TheOptician vs dalee will be played tonight, so we're eager to see this result!

In Group H, top seeds Napoleon 1er and Master Mind are through to the knockout stages, both at 18 points. The last round will settle down with a clash between these two to decide first place!

That's it for now, keep tuned for the next update!

3.5 days remain of the Group Stages. Here is the lowdown:

(Definite qualifiers in red, Group winners underlined)

Group A

Nortrom has qualified. Winner of Nortrom v Great Manos wins the group. If Nortrom wins, then Great Manos and mirmidonas.gr tie for 2nd and will need a play-off.

Group B

Spion.. and Henry domerkant are through - they play each other on Sunday to decide top spot.

Group C

Sorrow has won the group. Sem van Geffen needs a draw or better to take second place - he plays KARAISKAKIS tomorrow. Should KARAISKAKIS win, then he needs a draw or better against Fairway to take second place. Fairway could still force a three way tie.

Group D

LAZZLO is in the house with 19 points and will qualify should josephwhite fail to beat roeczak. josephwhite can force a three way tie by beating roeczak.

Group E

maxroelofs wins the group with 4/4. hondjekapitein takes second place beating leppie on head-to-head

Group F

Napoleone 2eme and Jesus_saves play tomorrow - a win for either player would secure qualification. The other contender Moghedien needs a draw or better against Capt.gunter but could still qualify with a loss. Lots of permutations here, this will go down to the last game regardless.

Group G

dalee needs a win to force a three way tie with TheOptician and don mitsos. If he fails then TheOptician wins the group and don mitsos takes second.

Group H

Master Mind and Napoleon 1er are through - they play each other on Saturday to decide top spot.

Players qualified so far: 8/16

Group Winners decided so far: 2/8

Chances for three way ties: 3
