2019 DOUBLE/MULTIPLE CHASING RULE

The landmark announcement last summer of the MT's trial enforcement of double/multiple chasing (d/m chasing) is being updated and made into a permanent rule for the site. Thanks to all who contributed in a recent public discussion on the matter.

The new rule text will be as follow in all black. Below that, if you are interested, i you can click on the detailed red/black version showing key highlights made to the new rule in red.

----------
Definitions:

  • Double/Multiple Chasing (D/M Chasing): To continuously threaten one or more pieces where the opponent can keep evading forever.
  • 5/25 Plan: The either/or threshold limits that must be crossed before the MT will recognize the offense of d/m chasing. It means either 5 minutes with screenshots or video, or 25 moves with video, whichever comes first.

----------

Effective immediately d/m chasing beyond the offense limits of the 5/25 plan will not be allowed. The MT will judge all cases involving ranked games, while tournament games on this matter will be judged by the organizing party using these same rules. The MT will, if requested, advise the organizing party and/or may, in some cases, act as appellate judges for tournament games.

In case you are being d/m chased, please understand the following:

- Video proof is necessary to claim the offense based upon the 25 move standard. We must see 25 moves of d/m chasing in your evidence.
- Screenshots will suffice in most cases to claim the offense based upon the 5 minute standard. We must see 5 minutes of d/m chasing in your evidence.
- Either a defeat screen or a tie screen is required if a victim wishes to have points restored under this enforcement.

  • If a defeat screen is presented, 25 points will be added to the victim and deducted from the offender.
  • If a tie screen, this correction will be 13 points for each player.
These adjustments are, obviously, only for claims that are upheld, and are in addition to any punitive punishment for the offender.

Should a victim of a 5/25 d/m chase give up a piece or position and then play on, he may still claim full enforcement under this provision.

  • If he wins the game, reporting the incident to the MT will bring punitive punishment to the chasing player only; no points will go to the victim, if upheld.
  • If he ties or loses the game, reporting the incident to the MT will bring both victory points to the victim and also loss + possible punitive points to the chasing player, if upheld.

Should a victim of d/m chasing NOT give up a piece or position and then play on, he will only be able to make a claim for punitive enforcement against his opponent under this provision.

  • If he wins the game, reporting the incident to the MT will bring punitive punishment to the chasing player only; no points will go to the victim, if upheld.
  • If he ties or loses the game, no adjustment for victory/loss points will be made for either the victim or his opponent.  The result on the battlefield will stand in this case.

- The MT will not hand out a d/m chasing penalty for occasional illegal moves. This rule aims to penalize only continuous d/m chasing, as defined by the 5/25 limits above.
- The MT will, however, penalize players who try to stay just under the threshold as a means of being as annoying as possible. Depending on the case we may merely send an informational letter to these players.
- Informing your opponent at least once that the d/m chasing moves he is making are illegal is courteous but not required.

______________
Penalty schedule:
1. Lost game (and thus point adjustment) + Warning letter
2. Lost game (and thus point adjustment) + 100 point deduction + Warning letter

4. Lost game (and thus point adjustment) + ELO to 100 penalty + 1 month ban + Warning letter
5. Lost game (and thus point adjustment) + Reset
