2019 DOUBLE/MULTIPLE CHASING RULE

The landmark announcement last summer of the MT's trial enforcement of double/multiple chasing (d/m chasing) is being updated and made into a permanent rule for the site. Thanks to all who contributed in a recent public discussion on the matter.

----------

Effective immediately, double or multiple chasing (d/m chasing) beyond the offense limits of the 5/25 plan (see definitions below) will not be allowed. The MT will judge all cases involving ranked games, while tournament games on this matter will be judged by the organizing party using these same rules. The MT will, if requested, advise the organizing party and/or may, in some cases, act as appellate judges for tournament games.

- Definitions:
  • Double/Multiple Chasing (D/M Chasing): To continuously, with one or more pieces, threaten one or more pieces of your opponent on every move where the opponent can keep evading forever.
  • 5/25 Plan: The either/or threshold limits that must be crossed before the MT will recognize the offense of d/m chasing. It means either 5 minutes with screenshots or video, or 25 moves with video, whichever comes first.
  • Loss of Game Adjustment: The points deducted from the chaser and restored to the victim whose case is upheld. (see Penalty Schedule below)
  • Secondary Punitive Penalties: Penalties against the chaser beyond the loss of game adjustment if a case is upheld. (see Penalty Schedule below)
  • Full Enforcement: Loss of game adjustment + secondary punitive penalties
  • Partial Enforcement: Secondary punitive penalties only.

- In case you are being double or multiple chased, please understand the following:

  • Screenshots will suffice in most cases to claim the offense based upon the 5 minute standard. We must see 5 full minutes of d/m chasing in your evidence.
  • Video proof is necessary to claim the offense based upon the 25 move standard. We must see at least 25 moves of d/m chasing in your evidence.
  • Either a defeat screen or a tie screen is required if a victim wishes to have points restored in a loss of game adjustment.
  • Without a defeat or tie screen only secondary punitive penalties will be applied to the offender if a case is upheld.

- Who May Claim Full Enforcement:

Players may claim both the loss of game adjustment and also secondary punitive penalties (see Penalty Schedule below) if their case is upheld by the MT, and if they show a defeat or tie screen in their evidence, AND if they are -

  • the victim of a 5/25 double/multiple chase who quits the game during or immediately after the 5/25 offense and seeks MT restitution. - OR -
  • the victim of a 5/25 double/multiple chase who gives up a piece or position due to the offense, and who then plays on and either ties or loses the game.

- Who May Claim Only Partial Enforcement:

Players may claim ONLY Secondary Punitive Penalties (see Penalty Schedule below) against their opponent if their case is upheld by the MT, AND if they are -
  • the victim of a 5/25 double/multiple chase who wins the game. - OR -
  • the victim of a 5/25 double/multiple chase who DOES NOT give up a piece or position due to the offense, and who then plays on and either ties or loses the game.

- Penalty Schedule:
The Loss of Game Adjustment will be calculated as follows:

a-) If a defeat screen is presented, 25 points will be added to the victim and deducted from the offender.

b-) If a tie screen is presented, 13 points will be added to the victim and deducted from the offender.

c-) If neither a defeat screen nor tie screen is presented, then only secondary punitive penalties will be imposed.

The Secondary Punitive Penalties are the underlined parts below.

  • Loss of game adjustment (points adjustment) + Warning letter
  • Loss of game adjustment (points adjustment) + 100 point deduction + Warning letter
  • Loss of game adjustment (points adjustment) + 100 point deduction + 1 week ban + Warning letter
  • Loss of game adjustment (points adjustment) + ELO to 100 penalty + 1 month ban + Warning letter
  • Loss of game adjustment (points adjustment) + Reset

- Further Notes:
  • The MT will not hand out a d/m chasing penalty for occasional illegal moves. This rule aims to penalize only continuous d/m chasing, as defined by the 5/25 limits above.
  • The MT will, however, penalize players who try to stay just under the threshold as a means of being as annoying as possible. Depending on the case we may merely send an informational letter to these players.
  • Informing your opponent at least once that the d/m chasing moves he is making are illegal is courteous but not required.
