13 Stratego - The tactical conquest game with 80 pieces

Here is a box made in the 1980s, aimed at the German market. Notice I have made 4 pictures for a change.

The first picture is the front of the box which is very different from the design used in the 30 years prior. It has a man and a boy(?) on the front plus shot of actual content of the box.

The 2nd picture is actually the backside of the box. It shows exactly what will be inside the box

The 3rd picture is the actual inside of the box. The graveyard is a bit deeper than in other designs and it makes it very easy to put your pieces away without them turning over. The condition is almost as new.

The 4th picture is a board we have seen many times.

The first time I saw this box was at Spiel Essen, the biggest board games convention in the world. When I saw the front, I had to have it, no matter what was inside.

Pieces material: Standing towers

Piece Color:red,blue

Board: hard carton

Outside box: Blue

Year made: 1980s

15 Sharpe's Attack

Remake of L'Attaque, a gamethat was out long time before Stratego was made.

Boardgamegeeks description says "An edition of the very old game L'Attaque, most familiar now as Stratego by Jumbo. This edition is themed on a very popular British TV series in the 90s called Sharpe, based on Bernard Cornwell's famous series of novels set the Peninsular Wars. Sharpe was a maverick British Major leading his troop in running battles with the French, mixing it up with the ladies and spies along the way."

On the picture of the board you can see that the number of places to cross the water is different than in Stratego. I bought this in London a very long time ago.

Pieces material:carton setups in frames standing on gray feet

Piece Color:white

Board: Green

Outside box: Red

Year made: 1980s-1990s?

16 Stratego

The outside of this box is not blue like most other Stratego boxes from similar times but a nice dark green.

The pieces are used in various other travel versions. As you can see my box is mint, at least the plastic bag with the pieces was never opened.

Pieces material:plastic setups in black feet

Piece Color:red and blue

Board: Green

Outside box: Darkgreen

Thanks Max, I am just getting started on posting these. Got  quite a few more coming. A lot of those could be a bit boring though for tournament players like yourself, cause they are variants of the recent tournament boards.

Also I realized some of my best boards are mint, still in plastic.  Others are rare pirated copies of the game, that I don't want to display on the internet because they are probably forbidden by court order now.

As some good news: I found back one of my Jumbo mini games and it seems to be different than the one Master Mind described. It will be the next post coming.

17 Mini Stratego

This is the game I found back today when cleaning the cupboard looking for another game. It is very small and one of the minis I had, has probably been used in high school to play during history and math lessons, though we played a lot of magnetic chess too under the table.

Pieces material:plastic setups to be put into the board

Piece Color:red and blue

Board: yellow

Outside box: See through plastic

18 Stratego - The strategy game full of surprises

Another set from the US market. The board itself has nice coloring again. The inlay of the pieces is gold colored (on the red pieces) and silver colored (on the blue pieces).

The actual piece art is a bit more abstract than in European variants, but the silhouettes are readable enough to make this game work.

Piece Color:red and blue

Board: hard carton

Outside box: White and blue

Stratego set 18 is very familiar Morx some us in America do recall this set. It is nice to see it again and I really enjoy seeing the pieces marked properly. Marshal-1 General-2 etc.. it also has the advantage of letting you know what each piece is on board itself. This is good for beginners and novice players. I understand that by me using the word properly for pieces, may upset my European -fellow fans of game . It is just this Americans opinion-nothing personal : )

@rgillis783: there are a few things I think are most different between US and European players:

1 The numbering discussion 1-10 vs 10-1

2 The scout cannot hit on another piece directly

3 The equal pieces trade concept (some Americans think attacker wins with equal pieces)

4 The concept of draw (most Americans rather die fighting than accept a "cowardly" draw

About the draws: I find it a bit strange that ISF rules declare a game a draw if both players have no moveable pieces left, instead of a loss for the player to move next (which would reward the 2sq advantage in equal material endgames). Do you know whether this has always been the case or if there were some editions with other draw rules?

19 Stratego

A European set made by Jumbo. The front of the box has a map that has Austerlitz on it, so there is a Napoleon connection.

This set has a plastic ring in the graveyard, that can be used together with the rules to make a divider as shown in the 3rd picture. It is probably one of the first designs that has some sort of divider. I have not seen other boxes that use this mechanism.

Pieces material:standing towers

Piece Color:red and blue

Board: hard carton

Outside box: Blue
