Come to think of it, I record right next to our aquarium. LOL! Will need to change my location.

LOL! If I could only read stratego pieces as well as water sounds :)

Hi,
Fairway asked me to do an analysis of his game vs Gogakos, so here it is.

first off I want to rate your play in all 3 game stages.

Startgame 7/10
Midgame 9/10
Endgame 6/10

Please note that I watched this without the commentary as I had others around I didn't want to disturb. Comments were written as I watched so I had no knowledge of what would happen later.

00:39- You bring the major out to attack, but ultimately he ends up continuing to run back to the marshal and spy. This is bad for 2 reasons; 1. When you are near marshal the colonel is open to being exposed, potentially leaving you with exposed major and colonel for next to nothing.
2. Every time you run back, you are doing it very confidently, letting your opponent know you feel safe, a feeling which generally only happens around marshal or spy, or both.
This was the only main problem with your Startgame.

03:44- I love how you move the colonel and instantly hover your mouse over the spy :D

Not sure where it started, but you did very well in Midgame and got some important pieces

09:58- After the majors swap you should move the marshal up and block the middle of his base, this puts pressure on him and jams him between your marshal and colonel.

11:30- Good, but the opportunity is partially gone.

12:18- Could be a game changer. Should have used luit instead of capt, still leaves you 2 good pieces up.

13:50 spy is free, personally I would go attack with spy and marshal toward the left whilst defending with luit.

17:04- The piece he is moving is very likely a luit, don't bluff; bring captain out for sure. Move luit on the left to be diagonal, then try to trap his with marshal and captain.

These were the main points, the rest don't really fit in a particular time.

you played a good game, you didn't do the best start, but with a bit of luck (major) you got through. Your Midgame was good but lost a little focus coming into Endgame. Endgame you were far too defensive IMHO. You were ahead and threw away pieces by defensively looking for colonel. However I really liked the fact that you did not hesitate to do that lotto when you did, that was absolutely necessary and could not be delayed.

Overall I was impressed by how you played and if my analysis seems too negative, its cause there are so many positives I can't write them all ;)

I might edit this later with my suggestions for different options to fix where mistakes where made.

I hope this helps you.

gl with your games and keep up the good work!

I think both you and your opponent missed a few opportunities in the endgame.

At 28:15, you moved your captain to G7 in order (your words!) "to prevent any miners", which ironically let his miner on B5 get to E1. :)

At 29:50, he could have directly moved right with his incoming miner to F5 (threatening to hit on G2), and leave his other miner on E1 to keep the threat alive that he could have hit with his miner on F1, which would have guaranteed that your flag was opened up. Since he still had a scout left, that would have severely restricted your captain. (Directly hitting on F1 is bad because it would reveal the sarge/miner uncertainty).

At 31:04, he could have moved his sarge left to E5 which would leave you with a tricky choice:

  1. You must not move your miner left to E4, because if it's a sarge he takes on E4 and he is guaranteed to trap your last miner. If that miner on C1, you will have to take on D1, and if it's on B1, the sarge will trap it (even if the 2 square would have been against him, he has a scout to change that).
  2. So you must move your miner up and let him take it with a similar result as in the actual game. Still, he should have given you the option of making the mistake.

Firstly-

The noise in the background is my computer fan. It is very annoying and quite aggravating seeing it in the videos, but I don't know how to get rid of it!! Any suggestions? I'm really quite mad at it... it's especially loud in the third and fourth video but I promised I'd upload four.. so.. oh well..

This is a game against the Black Mamba

I commentated on the game but kind of forgot to click a button which would make it so one could hear the commentary... so no commentary on this one (whoops) :)

It's a great game regardless !! :)

Alright, I'm back with more videos and a new series: "road to platinum"

I play on my other account , which started out as silver marshal, and see how many games it takes me to get to platinum

I will do my best to record and commentate every game I play from now on for that account, and here are the first two episodes:

Good game I love your reactions to a lot of his risks. He is simply just playing a friendly game though taking risks he wouldn't in a rank or tournament. Still a nice win, Gratz :)

On a technical view, you could have done much better with the attack right side. You have a captain and colonel 1st & 2nd row yet you take a serg and major from ur 3rd row which is even next to flag to make it worse. attacking with your captain is fine to attack here, backed by colonel to follow with scouts.

At 9:55 if his colonel is a scout you lose your spy, you want to be lifting you captain at b3 to b4 to prevent this.

At 3:08 You don't want to be wasting this scout here, you want to post the scout up next to your general to prevent colonel and marsh getting through.

at 3:36 this is pretty much a terrible situation you have put your self in and lucky Astros did not capitalize on it.

Imagine a colonel taking your major then spy and now marsh has your general trapped.

You need to have posted your general up with another piece next to it and not let your self get in to this situation, once you are in this situation you need to make room for your general to escape from his "unkown" marshal by moving your captain away and you are even able to attack with it as you are ahead and can afford to lose for info.

Ty for game feel free to challenge whenever :)

That is very helpful Fks, so thank you. Ideally the best situation around 3:45 would be to have that miner in front of the general, who would be on the 2nd row, while the major would be diagonal to the general (up and right one) with spy guarding them both. I couldn't figure out a way, however, to get that miner out and also didn't want to shuffle any pieces for fear of losing one or more of them because I didn't know the col or the marsh. However I was fairly confident that the marshal was on the left side, and the col on the right or center, which is why I was aggressive in the center.

As for 9:55 you are exactly correct and at the time I wasn't even thinking of this as a possibility. I guess I'm very lucky it wasn't a scout!!

Friendly game with Fks:    https://youtu.be/NDhSm-39Tu0

Great game by you, Had me fooled your spy was marshal the entire game.

1:54 Trading off colonels is a pretty big mistake imo, I thought scout was major and was fine with hitting maybe too much of a risk but from what I had seen on that side thus far I wasn't expecting a general or marshal.

Why the trade is a mistake is your trading a unknown colonel for a known colonel and you are letting me scout your spy here. A much better move is to "defend" colonel with luit. This will allow you to grab a piece with the colonel most likely that known captain a bit later in to the game.

5:05 ?. You don't want to risk your piece for nothing. There is no reward here for you to bring down you major. The colonel info is not worth a full major.

24:44 game losing blunder. 5 bombs and 3 pieces to lotto, the odds aren't in your favor. You don't need to lotto here and have win/draw.

Besides this well played game, you are definitely growing stronger as a player and look forward to seeing you at high platinum very soon! Thanks for game :)
