Hey guys, I discovered a way to play the desktop version of stratego, including good animations and the ability to chat with friends and make QA strategies, but on your phone or tablet.

How to do it:

Download the "Puffin" browser app on your device (this app is free and safe)

-Puffin has adobe flash player, so it enables you to play all sorts of desktop games on your mobile device.

Search "www.stratego.com/play or www.stratego.com/en/play. You will be brought to stratego desktop page.

In order to type in your username and password: go to the top right corner where it displays three verticle dots (settings/options button) and turn on the keyboard.

On mobile you can do all the things the desktop version has... But one more thing. You can play both QA and full, but when ou find a match, again go the the options button and select "theater" which allows you to view the whole board without scrolling to the side/down.

Let me know what you guys think!

That was exactly what I was telling Major Nelson, a great way to play from your handheld device without using the trash app

Fairway, you've come up with a real gem there! Thanks. :) I played my first game and lost already but it was quite fun to play on my phone with the old look again! I'm thinking that I can even play on Gravon with this new method. That has not been available through my chrome browser. Thank you for posting this. I, for one, greatly appreciate it!

Well, Fairway, I don't know how much I do appreciate it now. I've gone 1-3 since playing today! :) lol

The puffin browser is indeed fast. There are a couple of small landmines to avoid when using it for stratego but I only hit one of those. The other losses were totally on me. Hey, there's an adjustment period! The desktop is far different than the new app.

Only one thing bothers me about playing the desktop version on my phone and that's the slight difficulty in seeing the graveyards information. I have an S5 which has a fairly large screen. Any smaller and it would not be easy to do, I think.

Still, this is the neatest thing! I never thought I'd be amazed on the site again. Count me as amazed tonight! Thanks, Fairway.

One thing you don't want to do is hit your back button twice in a row on your phone. The first time allows you to remove the theater setting and see your graveyards better and bigger. Then you can simply reapply the theater setting. But if you strike the key twice in a row it kicks you out of the game and you have to restart it, which takes time and always makes me nervous. So far I've gotten back in every time except one when I accidentally pressed Decline instead of Rejoin. But that was my fault and my fidgety finger.

I've also noticed the screen tends to "fuzzy up" when my internet is poor.

Well, I for one, have never hit the back button twice while playing on my phone, but you just have to be careful. Remember, I've lost many a game , both full and quick, by pressing the "Go back" button twice in the setup screen on the computer (top left) which kicks me out of the game without any chance to reconnect.

And remember, you can always go to settings and click "refine image" if it says fuzzy for longer than a few seconds.

Glad you're enjoying it, Gary :)

A weird thing I've noticed is that the first move does not have to be red. I've been red and the other guy's been blue and he's gotten the first move. I don't know if that's puffin but in my experience red has always gone first, no matter if that's me or my opponent, desktop version or new app (that I played on so much).

Have you seen this, too, Fairway?

I don't know. It's a good question. At my level the vast majority of players appear as either only red or blue to me.

I can see your problem with that button. It would certainly cause you to lose if you press 'Leave Game'. Ironically, in all my time here, though, I've never done that. So I guess we each have our own landmines to avoid. :)

Fairway, I'm surprised a lot of people aren't discussing this. It's an amazing thing.

One thing that I'm running into every time is that when I open Puffin and Stratego loads, I'm always forced to enter my username and password to login. This even though I check the Remember Me box each time. Have you this problem as well?

Using the straight up website version on Chrome I am never asked for this any more. It would be nice to achieve that on Puffin.

One thing that is nice on this new Puffin browser is that I can now view the Stratego leaderboards. They never worked properly on Chrome before. So that's nice. Another nice thing is that I have fuller editing features for making Forum posts, just like the desktop version. For example, I can now underline everything! That wasn't possible on Chrome. So that's neat as well.
