This is another silly poll. But thank you for the two minutes you will spend on it.

If you look at how the pieces come in the box the marshal is the in row 1, column 1, so he belongs first.

The point of this poll is to verify what people might think on first seeing the piece numberings in the new app. The new app gives the choice for piece numberings and calls them 1-10 and 10-1. One is for European and the other American numberings. But which is which? If you don't know, what do you think they should be?

Think about, IUB. If you were given the settings choice in the new app to pick "1-10" or "10-1"....which one do you think would be for your European piece numberings where the Marshal is a 10? Which one, do you think, better describes the European system, "1-10" or "10-1"?

Maybe 10-1 because of the different decisions taken in the past...

The old app also allows for this.

Chewtoy, the old app actually calls them American or European, doesn't it? It's been so long since I've used it. 😢 I know the web version calls them by name.

The point is, in the new app they use no names, only a number group (either 1-10 or 10-1). So which do you feel better describes American pieces, 1-10 or 10-1?

And which do you feel better describes European pieces, 1-10 or 10-1?

I'm from USA so I do go with the American value system.  Plus think of it this way:  Marshal is the best unit on the board correct?  What do you call someone who is the best?  That's right #1!   Though no rules on this yet, but for the North American Stratego Federation any noting of number by the units, I will be using the American values.

Thanks for the comment, Rob!

Unfortunately, that wasn't my question. I'm wanting to know what you think best describes American and European pieces. The names they have to choose from in the new app are "10-1" and "1-10". Which one, in your opinion do you suppose should mean the American pieces? Which one the Europeans?

The best piece is the #1 piece on the board, therefore deciding his  number for me: 1.

This poll has not been clear to anyone apparently, I'm sorry.

It concerns the choice the developers have made in the new app. Do you agree with it? If you haven't used the new app let me explain it to you.

What they have done is call the "10-1" pieces American and the "1-10" ones European. Is this sensible/intuitive to anyone?

Well, it's not about preferring American or European numberings, no. But it is precisely about how to describe those two choices with numbers and not names.

My point is, most people who have responded here agree that "1-10" looks like the designation for the American pieces. And that "10-1" looks like the designation for European ones. But this is not how the developers have set up the new app.

My simple question on the poll was to try and establish the fact solidly that the devs have gotten this wrong.

It was not directly clear to me that "1-10" is indeed the American numbering (which I am used to play with) but it took me just one game to figure it out so that is not too bad. Something more descriptive like "M=1" vs. "M=10" or just a picture of the marshal icon with either 1 or 10 shown next to it would probably be more clear.

I like the idea of the picture with the "1" or "10" in it as an excellent idea. Thanks, tomato123456. I doubt they take that advice but it would be clearest. It would maybe even be a bit better to have a Marshal/Spy pair shown twice, one with the "1-S" under it for the Americans and another with the "10-1" under it for the European pieces.

I didn't answer the question thinking it would have any effect on actual changes in the app. As you may know from some other posts I made, I have little reason to believe that any advice on here is taken seriously by the developers. So, I just wanted to give you an answer personally. Actually that suggestion you made about the marshal/spy pair is also much more clear then simply "1-10" or "10-1". Should it not be "1-S" or "10-S" though to make it more accurate? As far as I know, the spy is always marked with an S instead of a number.
