Just over a week remains to register for WinterTourn 2018.

http://forum.strateg...8-registration/

As things stand, the notable absence of the majority of the so-called elite presents a glorious opportunity for the 27 participants registered so far.

I think one of the "elite" has already signed up, what are you talking about?! :)

The number of registrations for WinterTourn 2018 has now reached 41, with 5 Apex players now involved.

Notably there are 11 new players who are making their individual TC debut, which is always nice to see.

Registration closes in 38 hours

WinterTourn Preview

Only the most courageous warriors sign up for WinterTourn - those willing to brave the extreme cold and put their lives on the line. Chilliness around the board area can often cause brain freeze, and last year sub-zero temperatures were recorded in almost every match.

With the WinterTourn 2018 draw now released by TC (http://challonge.com/WinterTourn2018) we can take a cheeky look...

The A-Listers

Of this year's crop of hopefuls, 5 already have a place secured in the Pyramid's top rung, and the local media have been referring to them as A-Listers - presumably in an attempt to drive ticket sales. Losermaker and Grizzlybear both drew a bye in R1, but could potentially meet each other in the Last 16. texaspete09 in particular will be looking to prevent that from occurring, should he get past stamen feson. As if he needs any help, Hielco also has a bye. He will play either Spaher or Master Mind in R2 and could avoid other A-Listers until the Quarter Finals - where he would meet playa1. Last year's champion has a tricky path to get there though - he will have to condemn both KARAISKAKIS and Napoleon 1er to Rehab. Unladen Swallow is the sole A-Lister in the lowest quarter of the draw, but has Henry domerkant and don mitsos 'hanging around and looking ominous' (according to a dishevelled onlooker)

The Ladies

The mens and womens facilities at WinterTourn are not exemplary, but they are of equal size. This means queenbee1 and Kambia get 4.5 sofas and 3 TVs each. Not so lucky on the draw though - they meet Aris1970 and malcom.jansen respectively.

The Debutants

14 of the 47 heroes in WinterTourn are playing in their first TC (individual) tournament. In the only all-debutant clash schulmeister meets jimmys13, whilst there are baptisms of fire for macedoniagr (v leppie) and PHAETHON (v Unladen Swallow). vspy13 has the opportunity to book a family re-union in R2 (should he manage to overcome IOLAUS1926) with ELISSASIOS-GR, while elsewhere Vasileios Nyxtas meets FGP_ (for the chance to play Fks) and raffeke takes on The (re-branded) Achaean.

The other 5 debutants have a free first week to wander around the WinterTourn grounds. To be honest, there's not much to do - so they'll probably familiarise themselves with the battlefields and watch their potential opponent play in R1. Mind they don't scout set-ups though - eagle-eyed staff are on the lookout for anyone with a pen and notepad. Geo_Tsarpista will face Luckypapa or pasxalistz, and fighter68 will meet roeczak or morias. GrShark already knows his R2 date - a curiousity of there being 47 warriors - it's josephwhite

capt.gunter played on metaforge many moons ago, and finally returns from the Stratego wilderness to meet Major Nelson - the prize being a second round date with hellinon

That's all for now dear readers.

Seat #9 and the very following match would have been very appropriate to see in the quarter or even semi-finals. It's a little disappointing to see two of these caliber players leave from up top that early on. It will however make the consolation bracket a mine zone!
http://challonge.com/WinterTourn2018

Some of you that thought this tournamnet will be an easy one, you may be right as long as you keep winning. Another one or two upsets and one might consider the consolation bracket as tough as the champions bracket after round three is over. The anticipation to see the latter half of this tournamnet begs for pop corn... kind of like ouwesoks post yesterday.

Week 3 draws to a close at WinterTourn 2018, and its been eventful. Icy weather has been causing drama throughout the Winter Arena. Play on Table 4 last week even had to be stopped when LAZZLO's miner - almost 2 hours into an epic battle with Moghedien - had become stuck to the board from the icy conditions. A nearby hot chocolate was the unlikely saviour. That particular game needed a 3rd attempt to find a winner (Moghedien eventually prevailed) and the staff at the WinterTourn weekly reckon that is a first.

The opening weeks have seen a mass exodus of A-Listers. Of the 5 mentioned in our opening article, only one remains (Hielco). Reigning champion playa1 succumbed to Napoleon 1er, and Grizzlybear fell to texaspete09, whilst Unladen Swallow was dq'd and Losermaker withdrew. The rehab Bracket provides little comfort even in the early stages this year. KARAISKAKIS is the highest profile name already eliminated, later claiming 'I lost both games deliberately to concentrate on my WCO challenge'. I'm not sure playa1 would agree, whilst Aris1970 definitely wouldn't... (These two by the way - in the aftermath of WCO drama last week - needed only 1 day to schedule their battle to end all battles...) Quotes may or may not be fictitious.

A couple of new faces have also pulled off 'shock' victories, most notably GrShark who defeated josephwhite, and hellinon - who consigned Major Nelson to Rehab.

Two Premier Bracket quarter-finalists are currently known (Hielco and some other pretender), and there are a number of players who will consider themselves in with a good shot at grabbing a decent finish - and potential qualification to a higher Pyramid division. (Top 2 get Apex, Top 8 get Core).

There are a few juicy matches to look forward to in the next week or so. Henry domerkant becomes the first player to make the Last 16 (Premier) without playing a game (benefitting from Unladen Swallow's 'advice' to PHAETHON) where he takes on malcom.jansen. Leppie v texaspete09 also whets the appetite in Premier, whilst Major Nelson and Aris1970 face-off in Rehab. That will be another big name gone.

There's plenty to do for the spectator at WinterTourn 2018. Those looking for a thrill off the board can have a flutter in the Cold Winter Snap competition - Major Nelson currently leads the chasing pack and is looking for a famous Quiz double (he is shared for the lead with Wizard holder KARAISKAKIS and my evil twin).

Spectators can also try out some events that are being staged in the Winter Olympics later this year. You can ride the Luge and Bobsleigh for only three Battlecoins.

That's all for now loyal readers. Stay safe.

Another week at WinterTourn and the big names continue to fall. Grizzlybear was eliminated by fighter68, whilst texaspete09 was sent to Rehab by GrShark, one of the surprise packages of the tournament. Major Nelson's fine run of form was ended by Don mitsos and Master Mind - who this week battles Nortrom for the WCO Title - was defeated by leppie.

GrShark becomes the first player into the Premier Bracket semi-finals and in doing so secures a Pyramid spot in Core. But perhaps there is more to come?

With the departure of Grizzlybear, a new player in Apex is now assured for at least one of the remaining 15 hopefuls. Gpet0 is the player to lose out - unless the puppet master can find a route to the Champions league Final to overturn his relegation - something that his Greek compatriot KARAISKAKIS also hopes to achieve this week if he can manage a Top 2 in WCO.

Hielco is the only Apex member left in WinterTourn and he takes on Napoleon 1er (the highest ranked player remaining in Premier Bracket - after Hielco himself) in one of this weeks Quarter Final clashes. Also hoping to make the semi-finals are Moghedien and TheOptician, and Henry domerkant and Fks. It is also worth mentioning that Moghedien had to endure another 3 match epic to progress against B.E. M. HCS - that is consecutive rounds that the Mogster has achieved this fate, setting a remarkable record.

Leppie meets Geo_Tsarpista in Rehab, whilst Fairway takes on hellinon - the latter having recorded impressive victories against both Major Nelson and pasxalistz this tournament. In the bottom half of the draw Don mitsos will battle malcom.jansen while fighter68 meets josephwhite.

It is 'undeniably' blink and you'll miss it stuff here at WinterTourn.

A Winter Tale

47 warriors set-out on a Winter Quest fraught with peril, and only 6 have managed to brave the Arctic conditions to catch sight of the finishing line. Mighty Moghedien and Heroic Hielco have reached a rope bridge on the upper mountain and are about to duel to see who will make it across first, cut the ropes behind them, and condemn the defeated warrior to a long fall to their certain death.

The tumbling warrior will however be saved on landing in the Rehabyss below by the cushioning impact of 2 defeated warriors from a selection of 4 - Gruesome GrShark or Noble one Napoleon 1er, and Heavy duty Henry domerkant or TheOmnipotent TheOptician.

As night falls, with the fresh smell of flesh emanating from the nearby bodies of Geo_Tsarpista and texaspete09, the band of battle-hardened veterans will settle their differences, shelter in a cave, share a hot chocolate, and watch the latest episode of StrategoDale on an iPad with excellent wi-fi signal. Soap on a mountain edge brings new meaning to the term Cliffhanger.
