The Sunday Slice

So at the time of printing we are down to 8 in the Premier Bracket and a further 14 in Rehab. 5 Nationalities are represented in the Quarter Finals of the PB - Greece (3), Netherlands (2) Australia, UK, France. Perhaps a record but who knows. Certainly none of our reporters can be bothered to find out.

If Hielco is to continue his winning streak he'll have to do it from Rehab (like last time) after getting knocked out by Aris1970, but he's on his way after a rapid victory against Dutchkillers. Perhaps a record but who knows. Certainly none of our reporters can be bothered to find out.

The Sunday Slice

So we already have 3 happy Strategists who have booked their Premier Bracket Semi-Final slot - maxroelofs, KARAISKAKIS and playa1 are flexing their fingernails just one win away from the PB Final. One result is still awaited between Sohal and TheOptician - The French phenomenon first missed the bus and then tried to get out of playing the game... Come Monday night we will know our Final 4.

The rehab bracket has proceeded with less of the controversy of previous rounds. However this is not without the now frequent and familiar calls of 'lotto' as defeated players make their way back to the changing room for a much needed sandwich. We're great, here at the Weekly. Hope you are too. 13 players remain, but who will be the lucky one?

It was a very nice game with no ''blind '' hits at all.
Although with proper tactic I was several pieces ahead of my opponent and I had to get the win, unfortunately I was betrayed of my memory and eventually by the buffer. :(
I want to believe that Hielco enjoyed this game as much as me. I wish him gl on next round.

The Mini-Monday

The big news of the weekend is the reported departure of Hielco from the WinterTourn! With the site's number 1 out, suddenly the remaining 10 players will fancy their chances... Only 1 of the 4 known games is currently scheduled - Leppie and B.E.M. HCS meet to decide who will face the site's number 2 and defeater of Hielco in the Rehab Bracket. Local bookmakers have installed playa1 as the new tournament favourite....

The Sunday Slice

With Leppie providing another giant-killing and continuing his rise to the upper echelons of the Stratego elite, we are in the unusual situation where the Final 6 does not contain either Hielco or Sohal. Perhaps this is the magic of a knock-out competition. In the parallel tournament the Online WC, this pair currently occupy the top two positions, so there is no need for panic just yet...

Leppie wins the opportunity to take revenge on KARAISKAKIS, who knocked him out of the Premier Bracket earlier in the competition. In the other half of the Rehab, Australia take on the UK as TheOptician meets Losermaker.

playa1 and maxroelofs will be keeping an eye on these 4 as they meet each other in the Premier Final. On the battlefield, the gloves will be off and friendship will be thrown well and truly out of the window (to be picked up later of course).

It's getting a little wintery, here at the Weekly. We recommend you keep your gloves firmly on, dear readers.

The Draw for this year's WinterTourn has now been made.

http://challonge.com...ertourn_2016_17

54 players signed up and Round 1 sees a large number of high-profile clashes. Not in tournament history can I recall so many big name match-ups in the opening round.

Last year's champion Losermaker opens his defence against new TC recruit steelers.

The top 2 players according to the latest Clean Ranking (Hielco & constrictor) have also been drawn together.

Other notable Round 1 clashes include maxroelofs v texaspete09, KARAISKAKIS v mrbrainiac, spyros77 v gpet0 & Napoleon 1er v sevenseas.

Week 2 has begun @ WinterTourn and the Premier Bracket has been trimmed from 54 to 32. Tournament favourite Hielco meets maxroelofs whilst defending champion Losermaker meets rising star hondjekapitein - with the winners of these games playing each other next round....

playa1 returns to action against josephwhite, and other highlights include cflag v Brainysmurf and astros v leppie

12 unlucky players ended up in Rehab Round 1 while the rest of their classmates are enjoying the scenery of Round 2. One of constrictor and texaspete09 will be leaving WinterTourn early this week, after pasxalistz already departed following a win for tournament newcomer Pergamonto1.

That's it from WinterTourn for now - keep cool.

It may be freezing at WinterTourn, but the temperature is warming up on the battlefield. The past two winners of this tournament - Hielco and Losermaker - met each other last night with the Aussie taking victory and a place in the quarter finals. Grizzlybaer will be joining the quarter-final action after defeating gpet0 where he will meet gmits, who took down leppie earlier today. Master Mind and don mitsos are scheduled to fight to the death this friday, with the other potential quarter-finalists of the Premier Bracket set to play next week.

steelers and constrictor are through to Rehab round 3 where they meet each other. Also through are josephwhite, Great Manos and Spaher, who served up a dish of swiss misery to Napoleon 1er. 11 down and 43 remain....for now.

As temperatures drop here at WinterTourn, the competition is heating up. Grizzlybaer yesterday became the first hopeful to book a semi-final place after defeating gmits. There will be plenty of new names challenging for honours this time around. With Hielco in rehab and Nortrom taking a breather, perhaps this is a real opportunity for a new tournament winner. DR_ELL will be hoping so when he takes on defending champion Losermaker. CLEVERMIND or playa1 will meet the winner of that game. Master Mind saw off don mitsos at the third attempt and wins a date with the enigmatic Brainysmurf.

There were farcical scenes earlier this week when some reindeer invaded the pitch and caused a delay in one of the Rehab games. Tournament organisers admitted the event had caught them by surprise, and later apologised to fans for the inconvenison.

5 games remain to be played in Rehab R4, with Hielco, constrictor and gpet0 already waiting for them in the next round after their respective victories against astros, TheOptician and Pergamonto1. That puts the number of players left at 21, and more will fall in the next few days as the WinterTourn hopefuls are reduced like a cauldron of mulled wine.

There's been much drama around the Stratego Forum of late. But we don't expect the allure of Winter festivities to dampen the ferocity of the battleground collisions to come. Hats may be on, but the gloves are off.

The closing stages of WinterTourn will have a big impact on who qualifies for which Masters Division. Here we take a look at the table as it stands. Everyone in yellow remains in the tournament, so the TRP figure in the 'Winter Column' is only the minimum that each player could gain.

With Hielco and Nortrom already in, and the top 2 of WinterTourn guaranteed a spot, there will likely still be much jostling for position in Masters Div 1...

We are down to the Final 4 at WinterTourn.

Playa1 is the last man standing in the Premier Bracket after defeating Grizzlybaer, and will be looking to dispel memories of a year ago when he finished runner-up from the same position he occupies now.

On Friday, Hielco and gpet0 will do battle to earn a date with Grizzly in the Rehab Final.

Losermaker managed a respectable defence of his title (T7th) falling to DR_ELL SuPREME who records his best tournament finish (5th)

I've already booked my front-row tickets for this years showdown. Although there is snow forecast for the next couple of weeks, the heat on the Stratego board is (much like camping) likely to be intense.

In approximately 24 hours time, a gigantic crowd will witness playa1 take on Grizzlybaer in the WinterTourn Final.

The Big Bear was sent to Rehab by the Big Boom only a week or so ago, and the German Grizzly appears to have made a full recovery.

Grizzly will need to win twice to lift the title so playa1 has a bit of leeway to play with. What is for sure is that (just like in WCO) we are going to see a new winner, so I'd expect plenty of nerves on show in the Arena.

The Weekly wishes warm fortune to both contenders.

playa1 defeated Grizzlybaer last night to take the WinterTourn trophy. The awards ceremony - attended by several people - saw the Dutchman presented with an intricate crown carved from ice to represent skill under pressure and keeping cool.

Grizzlybaer received a slightly smaller ice crown (but still of high quality), and third-placed gpet0 a pair of WinterTourn gloves (there was not enough budget for a crown).

playa1 makes WinterTourn history by winning without checking into Rehab. Admittedly, there is not a huge pool of WinterTourns to pick from, but history is history.

The hard-core spectators were happy that the tournament finished as early in the week as Tuesday - this gives them time to catch the afternoon train to the WCO stadium. I can hear them chanting 'playa'. Perhaps they are eager to hit the beach after all this chill.

This is it from the WinterTourn Weekly. Will we be back next year? Who knows.
