In this thread we will post some news and rumors regarding the online WC.

First news:

Currently players from 4 continents (North America, Europe, Africa and Australia) are signed up to participate in the event. Thirty players are confirmed.

It seems to be a nice mix of relative newcomers to the online tournament environment and more experienced players. The swiss system should ensure everyone plays quite a number of interesting rounds.

As for the strength of the tournament: Nortrom just signed up. His name will enter the blue confirmed list any moment. This means that the 2 highest ranked players of www.stratego.com (Hielco and Sohal) and the highest 2 ranked players at the real live ranking (www.kleier.net) could meet each other online here in the tournament.

Rumors also say that there will be a live WC review if the online WC has 45 or more approved participants

As we speak the last player of the initial 45 signups is posting his data for approval. This means there will be 45 authorized players before the deadline of the Online Stratego Wizard. I will be running off to the Stratego Wizard to update my answer on this question.

:)

45 participations means :

I am likely to do a tournament review of the live WC (atmosphere, general impression, important moments during the tournament etc), not necessarily game-by-game analysis (maybe a few, who knows).

In the end it depends on how many sign-ups for the online WC, 45 sign-ups, and I will do the review for sure.

Should there be 50 verified participants, I will let the community ( only those who signed up ) decide which three live WC games I will provide analysis for.

That is some well-written and in-depth commentary on the games in your links, Nortrom. The fact you can remember so many game details (piece positions for both players) after the fact is amazing. I'd need a video.

So where do we go to vote for the live coverage games this year?

I like the Smiling Scout name. Makes me think we're all having happy battles. 😆

Not a bad thing....

And guess what: the opening game of the tournament is already planned for tonight:

The young English talent sevenseas is playing against the famous Stratego video poster maxroelofs.

Of course we will keep you informed about their game...

The whole game can be found in the WCO video thread. I will not spoil it by posting the score here.

Today at least two matches were played.

Greek star gpet0 played against Dutchkillers. In what was initially a tight game gpet0 took the initiative, but Dutchkillers got material advantage. This forced gpet0 to aim for more pieces. In the late game gpet0 did not manage to get enough compensation and at some point Dutchkillers ended the game by taking the flag.

In the other game played tonight Kostas2506 was having an exciting encounter with your Smiling Scout reporter. Early on Kostas got a lot of small pieces after Morx got one high piece. During the game the small piece advantage was not enough to help Kostas secure the board. In the late game Kostas almost finished up all miners but Morx last remaining pieces were enough to end the game with a win.
