For me the artwork of the new single player pieces is interesting and distinctive enough and works well for the venue it is in. I like them for the single player game, for sure. The appeal of that game is to a younger crowd and to that end the new cartoon-y artwork works very well. But if we are talking about new avatar designs for here on the main game, I'm not going to personally pick one of them for my avatar. I like a more serious bent to my icon that everyone sees because I take the game more seriously. (Being only a high general/low marshal, does that open me up to jokes!)

Anyway for here on the main game what I think would be neat for avatar artwork choices are some other styles that appeal on their classic natures. For one example the old European pieces would be loved by many here. Currently these can be selected for game pieces but not avatars. The other style I wouldn't mind seeing, being an American, are the old Milton-Bradley style pieces. These are my classic pieces. They are not available on stratego.com at all, though they are used on the online Probe game. Yet another avatar preference for many--though not really classic--would be the sci-fi designs.

I think more avatar options are clearly needed here on the site as the current choices, though good, are so limited. Plus, a side benefit to more choices would undoubtedly be increased battle coin sales. The new single player designs would appeal to certain people, I'm sure, but I don't think as much as other options.

These are my comments on avatars. Others can chime in. I've decided to start another silly poll to see what everyone thinks. I'm sure there are even more choices out there for everyone. Since the mainline membership cannot upload their own pictures directly to the site to use as avatars, what would everyone like to see as choices?

Nice input Gary!

I voted for the new single player pieces! I like the new look and I like change, What's interesting about the new design is the different faces the pieces have which gives it more character !

I'd prefer to keep the same style we have now, but supplement it w/ different themes (space theme, pirate theme, etc.)

We should be discussing how to fix the frenetic server instead of addressing cosmetic issues, but the latter doesn't pay the bills, so . . .

Classic European Pieces should be available for free here.

Yes different themes are good. I like the pirate idea.

Classic European is the other artwork available on this site for a coin purchase.

I think MB is the one at Metaforge and Jumbastic

Sgt.Blkdog, yes the classic European artwork is easily found on the game side Profile page, where you can purchase it for pieces artwork. Only, this doesn't make it available for avatar artwork.

Both Sgt.Blkdog and Kernel Mustard, I'm a bit shocked that I have to describe to two silver US players what good old American Milton Bradley pieces look like. For one, they are available in very good facsimile form on Probe, as I stated at the outset above. If for some reason you haven't played probe yet, find that here:
http://www.probe.imersatz.com/

Or a simple Google search of "stratego pieces images", or clicking on the link below, will take you to a page where the top row are all Milton Bradley pieces.

@ Sgt. Blkdog, I thought you were a bit of an old American coot like me. :) Didn't you grow up with MB stratego here?

@ Kernel Mustard, Milton Bradley pieces are definitely, emphatically NOT the one at Metaforge. They are their own cartoon-y ones. I got used to them pretty quickly, but I must say the lieutenants there look like John Lennon. :)

Have it be custom with the option for players to upload their own designs.

There would have to be moderator approval of images, hopefully, but I have said I like this idea. We can already, you know, load images for our signature line on the forum without any approval. (Trickz used to have a very questionable one.) So I'm not sure why the difference between the two systems, game and forum.

We would have to moderate those things, as Gary pointed out.
