Attached an updated version, a part was missing.

Anyone having any thoughts on this?

Things I like about your setup:

-Your flag is well defended by bombs and your 9, 10 and spy.

-The setup is not common, so it could be deceptive for opponents who are reasonably familiar with the game.

-Your marshal is in an unusual location.

-Your setup would be difficult to lotto against in the early stages of the game.

Things I do not like about your setup:

-Too many bombs in the front 2 rows.  If 2 or 3 bombs are identified with scouts or sergeants, your setup will be prone to a lotto attack in the later stages of the game

-Limited mobility, on either flank, again related to bomb placement.  Attacking will be difficult unless you are planning an aggressive attack up the middle with your highest pieces

-Marshal can possibly be scouted early in the game.

Hi everyone,

To follow up (and wrap up) on this thread:

First of all, thanks to everyone bringing up constructive arguments and feedback: I think we all benefited from that.

However, that brings me up to my second remark: although I would like others to follow up and contribute something substantive too, I noticed indeed a pretty lot of people I've recently played exactly knew my setup giving me a pretty damn hard time

Therefore, I disrecommend everyone to follow up as I initially requested, or at least not with currently employed strategies. Unless a whole lot of people will contribute, everything will all be well too clear to keep track of.

Me myself will need to adjust at this point, although I will not change my naturally preferred play style, I have to do something about the setup and strategy. Whether that will encompass a completely new (centralized) setup taking into account some feedback, or some major tweaks that will work against people with the knowledge presented; well, I've now learned not to disclose that for a while  ;)

So to sum it up: learn from the presented ideas and strategies, learn from the feedback in subsequent posts, but do never blindly use a published setup without modifications, as you will always at some point face people having at least the same knowledge.

[...] initial attacks with the general are rather stupid and slow.

I am interested in why you claim this. I have had problems with general attacks as often, if not more often, than with marshal attacks.

General can be unfavorably traded with one piece: the marshal.

The marshal can be unfavorably traded with one piece also: the spy.

But also, if you attack with the marshal and it is revealed, your opponent can freely attack with his general.
If you attack with your general and it is revealed, your opponent cannot freely attack with any pieces still due to the marshal and spy being hidden.

Is it just because the spy cannot be discovered without being lost that marshal attacks are stronger?

Number 4 has asked admins to get removed from forum and game side. He was around 600-700 ELO

Any good set up for 10p games?

In 10p it's not really about setup but how you play it. Front row spy is usually a good tactic against the blitzers

Do you close the flag with bombs or not?

In 10p and full I usually opt for a sealed flag; it is a lot safer most of the time. But there are certain situations (e.g. rematches) where you may want to change your style so that is where you may choose to opt for an open flag

If you play beginners you should safe your flag with bombs, against average and good players you can choose it for yourself.
